Organizing and participating in a one-day design sprint

UX/UI design

Mar 8, 2024

Project

Together with three fellow students, I coordinated a one-day design sprint for our course, UX23.

Throughout the sprint, participants were tasked with drawing out a small prototype for a specific user flow within a mood or habit tracker application. They worked within predefined parameters and adhered to a provided style guide, provided by our organizing team.

My role

I was responsible for

  • coordinating communication with feedback providers

  • overseeing project documentation

  • supporting fellow students during the design sprint

  • distributing individual feedback files to participants post-event.

  • Additionally, I actively contributed to the development of the event brief and predefined requirements.

My takeaway

Engaging in collaborative work with a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds and styles proved immensely rewarding. Putting aside our differences to craft a versatile style guide suitable for a wide array of students, each with varying skill levels presented quite a challenge. However, I'm pleased to say that I feel like we tackled this task with great success.

The Sprint

Despite having more background information prior to the sprint day compared to students not involved in organizing the event, we believed it remained fair to partake in the sprint ourselves. This decision was rooted in the understanding that the sprint was not a competition but rather an experience to work under strict time limitations and gain insights into our work from a professional perspective.

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the sprint, I began collecting inspiration for my project, developing a persona, and analyzing the core problem to be solved simultaneously with all other participants on the morning of the sprint day.

My takeaway

Participating in the sprint provided me with valuable insights into operating within strict time constraints, as my sprint day concluded upon leaving school around four o'clock. Additionally, I seized the opportunity to explore a design style unfamiliar to me. Recognizing the fast pace of the sprint as an ideal occasion to push my boundaries, I ventured into uncharted territory and experimented with a more out-there approach.
